Modesto SCM Meet

Modesto Masters Meet
August 2009

Twenty-one team records were broken at the Modesto Masters Short Course
Meters Meet held in the 25 meter pool at the Modesto Junior College.
Top eight finishes were recorded by all seventeen of the local Tuolumne
County Aquatic Masters swimmers.

Mike Giove (56) swam to four out of five best times in the 55-59 age
division. Not only was Mike the most improved swimmer of the meet, his
ten second drop in the 50 back (53.53) was the highest individual event
improvement amongst his teammates. His back time set a new team
record. Mike also dropped time in the 100 free (1:40.32) and 200 free
(3:54.86). After many months of hard work on his breast kick, Mike also
competed in the 50 breast for the first time.

The swimming trio of Sissy Mutzner (80), Dave Fairfield (70) and Matt
Gass (52) established 12 of the new team records and each had three
personal bests.

Eighty year old, Sissy again proved that age is not a deterrent in
swimming faster. She had personal bests in all three of her free
swims. Being a strong middle and distance freestyle, Sissy swam her
best in the last event of the day, the 100 free (2:10.86). She dropped
two in the 200 free (4:40.06) and one in the 50 free (58.98). All three
of the free events plus the 50 back (1:11.48) and 50 breast (1:18.03)
were new team records in the 80-84 age division.

Having a birthday this month and moving into a new age division inspired
Dave to challenge himself to move beyond his usual freestyle specialty.
Dave swam personal bests in the 50 back (47.96), 50 breast (48.77) and
100 back (1:41.48). He improved one second in both the shorter swims
and three in the 100 back. All three swims plus his 50 free (33.81)
were new team records in the 70-74 division.

Swimming in a 25 meter pool for only the third time, Matt set three new
team records in the 100 IM (1:22.00), 100 breast (1:31.69) and the 200
free (2:39.50). He was competing in the both 100 races for the first
time in a meter pool. His records were set in the 50-54 age group.

Three personal bests were also recorded by Connie Williams (63) and
Julie Giove (60). Perfecting her turns in the IM provided a five
second drop for Connie in the 200 IM (4:16.51). Being a versatile
swimmer, Connie again dropped her best by three and just missed breaking
the two minute barrier by swimming the 100 IM (2:00.06). She was also
faster in the 50 free (47.06).

Julie who just turned sixty and moved into the 60-64 group, swam faster
in the 50 free (48.21) and 200 free (4:03.37), plus the 50 back
(1:06.39). Her newly perfected faster flip turns helped her improve
three seconds in both the 50's and one in the 200.

Five swimmers scored two personal bests. Bill Anning's (68) steady
commitment to perfecting his strokes paid off in the back events as he
improved four in the 100 back (2:12.65) and three in the 50 back
(1:01.68). Laurie Perry (55) tackled the challenging 100 fly (2:08.88)
for the first time and also dropped three seconds in her 100 IM
(1:57.99). Lolly Owens (70) sprinted to bests in both her free swims.
She improved 3 seconds in her 50 free (1:00.95) and one in her 100 free
(2:17.01). Both Lolly's swims set new team records in the 70-74 division.

Being strong breast strokers helped both Dick Todd (67) and Kathy Horak
(50) set new personal bests in 100 IM and 100 breast events. Dick
dropped two in the IM (1:15.27) and one in the 50 free (29.64). Kathy
improved two in the 100 breast (1:43.40) and one in her IM (1:38.67).
Both of Dick's swims were new team records in the 65-69 and Kathy's 50
breast (47.60) was also a new team record in the 50-54.

Also contributing to the rewriting of the team record books were new
traveling meet swimmers, Adam Mazurkiewicz (31) and Lacey Neufeld (28).
Being a butterflyer in his youth, helped Adam set new records in both
the 100 IM (1:19.56) and 100 fly (1:17.93) in the 30-34 age division.
Lacey set a new mark in the 50 free (32.68) in the 25-29 group.

The team relay events always bring out fast swims in all four of the
relay team mates. All eight of the TCAM relays placed in the top
four. In the 200 free relay for the women, both TCAM teams placed first
in their divisions. For the youngsters, swimming in the 160+ group, new
meet swimmer Brooke Mazurkiewicz (31) led off followed by Laurie Perry,
Kathy Horak and Lacey Neufeld to finish in 2:33.11. Also capturing the
gold were the 240+ relay of Lolly Owens, Connie Williams, Julie Giove
and anchored by Arlene Probsting (66) in 3:21.11. Both teams had
exciting close finishes. The forty year relay age divisions are
determined by adding the team members ages together.

In the men's free relay, the 240+ team also placed first. Just missing
the older 280+ age group by only six years made the men's win against
much younger swimmers even more impressive. The team was composed of
Bill Anning, Karl Kleman (68), Dave Fairfield and Dick Todd with a
winning time of 2:26.29. In the 160+ division, the team of Matt Gass,
first meet swimmer, Jay Husther (51), Mike Giove and Adam Mazurkiewicz
(31). Their time was 2:17.40.

In the mixed medley relay, each swimmer swims a different stroke and the
team is composed of two women and two men. The 280+ team dominated in
their age division and finished first in 3:43.74. Lolly swam the back,
followed by Sissy breast, Dick fly and Dave anchored with free. The
120+ team competing in a packed field finished just out of first in
2:45.71. Their team was composed of Lacey, the wife-husband duo,
Brooke and Adam and anchored with Bill.

The 200+ teams raced each other and finished close with the team of
Laurie, Karl, Matt and Julie touching in third place overall in
3:09.53. They were followed by Arlene, Jay, Kathy and Mike in fourth
with a time of 3:21.05.

Jay Husher (51) and Brooke Mazurkiewicz (31) both made their meet debut
by swimming both individual event plus competing on relay squads.

The local masters swimmers will be hosting their own mini meets in
September and October. The growing traveling squad will also be
competing in the Pacific Masters Short Course Meter Championships in
Walnut Creek later in October.

Swimmers interested in swimming for fitness can contact Patti
Scott-Baier at the Sonora Sport and Fitness (532-4293) for more
